Description

Italian Herbs and Cheese Bread: a soft, golden loaf bursting with melted mozzarella, parmesan, and savory Italian herbs.


Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Optional: ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in olive oil, salt, and 2½ cups of flour. Mix until dough forms.
  3. Turn onto a floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes, adding more flour as needed until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
  5. Punch down dough and knead in mozzarella, parmesan, and herbs.
  6. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased 9×5-inch pan. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • For a milder flavor, omit the crushed red pepper flakes.
  • You can mix in shredded provolone or fontina for a different cheese profile.
  • Brush the loaf with a little olive oil or butter after baking for a softer crust.
  • Leftovers can be wrapped and frozen; rewarm slices in the oven for best texture.
