Description

One Pan Sweet and Tangy BBQ Sausage Rice is an easy, bold one-pan meal that brings smoky halal sausage, tangy BBQ flavors, and hearty rice together in under an hour.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 12 oz halal beef or turkey sausage, sliced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper (red or yellow), diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 1¾ cups chicken broth
  • ⅓ cup BBQ sauce (halal)
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced sausage and cook until browned, about 4–5 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  2. In the same skillet, sauté onion and bell pepper for 3–4 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  3. Stir in the rice and cook for 1–2 minutes to toast slightly.
  4. Add chicken broth, BBQ sauce, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar. Stir to combine.
  5. Return sausage to the skillet. Bring mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
  6. Cover and simmer for 20–25 minutes, or until rice is cooked and liquid is absorbed.
  7. Fluff rice with a fork, season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • This recipe uses halal sausage (beef or turkey). If using traditional pork sausage, ensure it fits dietary needs.
  • If you want a spicier dish, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the skillet with the onions.
  • For a gluten-free option, make sure the BBQ sauce is labeled gluten-free.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
  • If the rice isn’t fully cooked after the initial simmer, add a splash of broth and cook a few more minutes.
